Sharing the Love

We love opportunities to show off the great work that our students are doing all over the world. So many individuals are making meaningful contributions to the lives of people with dementia. A few years ago, when I was teaching a workshop at St. Nicholas Montessori College in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland, I met Adri Stander. We had an immediate connection and not long after we met, she enrolled in our Practitioner Certification course, giving me the opportunity to get to know her even better. I learned that Adri is a kind and resilient person who has overcome many challenges. She has a wonderful generosity of spirit. She is also a talented jewelry designer who has chosen to bring awareness to and raise money for Alzheimer’s disease through her artwork. Her story and contact information are below. Demi, The Remembrance Elephant

Adri Stander, a Montessori trained teacher and certified practitioner in Montessori for Aging and Dementia, lives in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

Adri writes, “During COVID I struggled to find my footing and signing up new clients with dementia proved challenging. I then went back to my creative roots in jewelry design and manufacturing. I was determined to make a contribution in the area of dementia, so I started to design a piece of jewelry that represents, supports, and raises awareness about dementia.”

The elephant is a symbol for Alzheimer’s, as it is believed to be the only animal that will never forget anything. She is holding up a forget-me-not flower representing remembrance, and the heart represents love! Inscribed at the back are the words “You may not remember, but I’ll never forget. “

The pendant is handcrafted from 925 sterling silver, approximately 30mmx38mm, engraved at the back with a v-loop attached, to be worn on a chain around the neck.

The lapel pin is handcrafted from 925 sterling silver, approximately 21mmx18mm, with a stabilizer to secure it at the back.
