The word for this month is definitely INSPIRATION! I am very blessed that I am able to travel to so many interesting places, share my vision of dementia care, inspire others, and learn from those I meet. I have just returned from Finland, Ireland and Romania where I taught workshops and also took time to learn about the culture and experience some remarkable places. My visit to Romania was hosted by Aura Cadis, founder of Fundacion Montessori Cluj, and I hope that I inspired her community as much as they inspired me!

Montessori Cluj serves 250 children ages 2–13 and their families. The community comprises four buildings that contain a number of beautiful Montessori classroom environments, each with exquisite attention to detail. The rooms are painted rich, inviting colors that made me feel comfortable and at home. Materials are creatively arranged on shelves, in open cabinets and on small tables in a way that drew in me, wanting to explore. Everywhere I looked, nature was incorporated into the children’s daily life through artistically arranged branches, a live moss wall, and other plant materials. The live moss wall was especially creative because it wasn’t a plant in a pot or a vase, but a large fixture of varying textures of shades of green that you could touch and visually experience in a very different way that if it had been on a table or in a pot.  Having the moss on the wall made it part of the room rather than something extra in the room.  I could imagine the fun the children have misting it with water and touching it.

Some of my other favorite details on the walls were the hand painted murals/decorative paintings done by guide Ioana Georgescu. She painted a timeline of the creation of the earth as well as a variety of shapes, plants and designs inspired by nature.  Some were very fun and whimsical and just made me smile.

Although this community has made extraordinary efforts to create a prepared environment, what stood out to me the most were the extraordinary people. The team of approximately 50 guides and staff love what they do. They love children just as they are, and the children’s families too. Their enthusiasm for teaching and living is infectious! I am very much looking forward to seeing how they incorporate elders into their community to enhance the lives of all involved.

So how has this inspired the way that I approach dementia care?

• First, I really want to find a video about how to make a live moss wall, and then convince one of the communities I work with to install it!
• I want to encourage our communities to use more color. Not to be afraid of having a dark blue accent wall or a teal green room. Out with the institutional and in the with inspirational!
• I want more materials throughout the communities, so no elder is ever sitting without something to do.
• I want to practice more grace and courtesy and promote infectious enthusiasm for loving elders as they are. It is time we start embracing aging instead of ignoring it.

Inspirando a la comunidad Montessori en Rumania

¡La palabra para este mes es definitivamente INSPIRACIÓN! Me siento muy bendecida de poder viajar a tantos lugares interesantes, compartir mi visión de la atención de la demencia, inspirar a otros y aprender de aquellos que conozco. Acabo de regresar de Finlandia, Irlanda y Rumania, donde impartí talleres y también me tomé el tiempo para aprender sobre la cultura y experimentar algunos lugares muy interesantes. Mi visita a Rumania fue organizada por Aura Cadis, fundadora de la Fundación Montessori Cluj y espero haber inspirado a su comunidad tanto como ellos me inspiraron a mí.

Montessori Cluj atiende a 250 niños de 2 a 13 años y sus familias. La comunidad comprende cuatro edificios que contienen una serie de hermosos ambientes Montessori, cada uno con una exquisita atención al detalle. Las habitaciones están pintadas de colores ricos y acogedores que me hicieron sentir cómoda y como en casa. Los materiales están dispuestos creativamente en estantes, en gabinetes abiertos y en mesas pequeñas de una manera que me atrajo, con ganas de explorarlos. Dondequiera que miraba, la naturaleza se incorporaba a la vida cotidiana de los niños a través de ramas artísticamente presentadas, una pared de musgo vivo y otros materiales vegetales. Uno de mis detalles favoritos fueron los murales pintados a mano pinturas decorativas hechas por la guía Ioana Georgescu.

Aunque esta comunidad ha hecho esfuerzos extraordinarios para crear un ambiente preparado, lo que más llamó mi atención fue la gente extraordinaria. Al equipo de aproximadamente 50 guías y personal les encanta lo que hacen. Aman a los niños tal como son, y a las familias de los niños también. ¡Su entusiasmo por enseñar y vivir es contagioso! Tengo muchas ganas de ver cómo incorporan a las Personas Mayores a su comunidad para mejorar las vidas de todos los involucrados.

Entonces, ¿cómo toda esta experiencia ha inspirado a la forma en la que brindo la atención a las personas con demencia?

• Primero, ¡realmente quiero encontrar un video sobre cómo hacer una pared de musgo en vivo y convencer a una de las comunidades con las que trabajo para que la instale!
• Quiero alentar a nuestras comunidades a usar más color. No tener miedo de tener una pared de acento azul oscuro o una habitación verde azulado. ¡Fuera lo institucional y dentro lo inspirador!
• Quiero más materiales en todas las comunidades para que ninguna persona mayor esté sentada sin algo que hacer.
• Quiero promover más gracia y cortesía, así el entusiasmo que contagia el amor y la aceptación a las personas mayores tal como son. Es hora de que comencemos a abrazar el envejecimiento en lugar de ignorarlo.

Espero que nuestro trabajo en Brush Development te haya inspirado a hacer las cosas de manera diferente.
